Chico State Women’s Rugby won 50-7 on Sunday, February 18th, taking their fifth win of the season.

Chico State played UC Berkeley during Berkeley’s double header, Sunday, February 18th, taking another win at 50-7. This is Chico’s fifth win of the season, as chico begins to play each team in their league a second time.

With a harsh wind facing them, Full Back Darby McFall scored three points off a penalty kick at the start of the match. Morelia Ayala scored shortly after McFall, giving the girls a solid lead, as first year Prop Rebecca Kilmartin scored a double, with two tries during the first half. Chico played with a killer pace, and lead the match with 36 points at the half.

Cal scored during the second half, after Mcfall’s third try,  bringing the score to 43-7. Shortly after, Wing,  Alyssa Pena, scored the last try of the match, rounding out the Wildcats to an even 50 points at the end of the match.

Chico will host their own double header starting the weekend of Saturday, February 24th, starting with their second game against Davis this season. After Davis, Chico will play Humboldt on Sunday, February 25th. Both games will be played at home, at the Chico State Rugby Pitch on campus, with an 11 a.m. kickoff for both matches.

Chico State Women’s Rugby won 74 to 7 on Saturday, February 10^th, over Humboldt State, advancing further into the start of the season undefeated.

Chico State is adding another game to their winning streak with their latest match against CSU, Humboldt. The team won with a total of 12 tries scored over Humboldt, giving them their fourth win of the season on Saturday.

In a spectacular show of Chico rugby, senior fullback Darby McFall scored the first try within minutes of the start of the match. Chico scored another seven tries within the first half, missing three conversions. With the score at 50-0 at half, Humboldt scored off a quick tap, throwing off their opposing team with an unexpected change of pace.

Undeterred, sophomore centre Hannah Westfall brought the game back up, scoring shortly after Humboldt, making her third try of the game. Westfall was not the only player to see multiple tries this game, as Mcfall, and sophomore lock, Jennifer Brissenden, both went on to score twice this match, adding to the final score of 74-7.

Chico has successfully played and won against every team in their league so far, topping their previous highest scoring match against UC Berkley, at 65-7. Chico will play Berkley again in their next match, Sunday, February 18^th, in Berkley’s double header.

On Saturday, the Chico Rugby Foundation, consisting of families and ruggers from Chico Oaks Youth, Chico State Women and Chico Mighty Oaks Rugby Clubs spent the day with the City of Chico’s Parks Division Crew completing a major clean up project at Teichert Ponds near Kohl’s. With over 60 volunteers we were able to remove a large area of overgrown black berry brush as well as a large olive tree, which was all being used as cover for multiple homeless camps. This Saturday, November 11th, will mark Chico Rugby’s 21st Annual Holiday Classic Rugby Tournament. This tournament is the longest running rugby tournament on the West Coast. (not 100% confirmed, but challenge anyone to correct?)

This year’s event will be held at Pleasant Valley High School. The first-round matches will kick off bright and early at 9:00am! There will be 8 of the top men’ teams in Northern California and 4 women’s teams that would give anyone a run for their money. Highlighted by the Chico State Women, nationally ranked each year, forever!!! 

Here’s a list of the teams participating: In the men’s division, Chico Mighty Oaks, Colusa Rugby Football Club, Sacramento Capitals RFC, Vacaville Black Dog Rugby Club, Reno Zephyr’s Rugby Club, Bay Area Baracus Rugby Football Club, Sacramento Black Hawk Rugby Cub and Life West Gladiators. For the women we will have Chico State Women Wildcats, Colusa Women Rugby Football Club, Humboldt State University Women Ruggers and the Triple Threat Traveling Rugby Football Club. Tournament schedule below.

It’s going to be a great day of rugby!! In addition, we will be honoring our countries veterans as this Saturday is also Veteran’s Day. This year’s tournament shirts, always a hit, will have a special Veteran’s day theme, so come out pick up a shirt and watch some great rugby!!!

Our free youth rugby clinic is ready to kick off for the 7th consecutive year. Come out and learn what rugby’s about or continue to improve and build your skills. Online registration has closed, but you can still bring kiddos out to the clinic. We just can’t guarantee we will have a shirt for them.

This clinic is for all athletes, male and female. Ages 7yrs -18yrs.

This has been an exceptional year for Chico Rugby! All 4 teams that made playoffs are still going strong and looking to bring home their respective championships!

The Rugby Nor Cal Playoffs started on the weekend of April 22^nd with the Chico Wild Oaks Girls High School team taking on the Berkeley Red Hawk Ladies in Chico. Tough match for the first 10 minutes, before the Wild oaks scored their first of many tries enroot to a 75-0.

Also on the day the Black Oak JV boys were pitted against a scrappy Elk Grove United Rugby Club. This was a back and forth match. The Black Oaks jumped out to a 30-point lead before Elk Grove woke up and almost got the match within striking distance, before the Black Oak backs put a try or 2 on the board to secure the win.

With these wins, the Wild Oaks will play for the Bowl Championship and the JV Black Oaks have earned the right to play for the Rugby Nor Cal Plate Championship in Stockton on May 6^th.

The undefeated, Chico Black Oak Varsity boys have an extra step in their march to the Championship match. It all started with their quarterfinal opponent Vacaville Black Dog Rugby on April 22^nd. This is a team that Chico has not beat in their early existence. The Vacaville squad is well coached by Brett Fortney, who, coincidently, played all 5 years of his college career at Chico State for the Black Oak’s coach, Mitch Jagoe. Vacaville came out and put up a couple tries but the Black Oaks responded, outscoring Vacaville and taking the W, 48-14 to remain undefeated!! This earned the right to go to Fresno to take on Buchanan Rugby Club.

Fast forwarding to Saturday April 29^th, the Black Oaks where off to Fresno to take on an undefeated Buchanan Rugby Club who was very confident!! Our boys came out flat and went down 7-0 in the first 3 minutes. The next 6 minutes had the Black Oaks turning the ball over 6 times, but luckily never broke in our defensive structure. The boys settled down and put up 36 unanswered points! The back line, led by the direction of flyhalf Bryce Jagoe and fullback Jamarquez Abram’s 4 tries was just too much for the home team. The rest of the backs, centers Dino McKellar, KJ Martin, Efrain Perez and a collaborate effort on the wings by George Back, Gabe Galvan, Avery Herbert and John Mathis-Paoli kept the Buchanan team guessing where we were going to go next! The forwards, anchored by 8 man Devin Berger and Luis Alvarez dominated the match. With scrum halves Alex Saise and Nik White running the forwards, they ran tight off the break downs, wide and basically all over! Flankers Tanner Topp and Richard Tyner, along with lock Azul Gonzales and hooker Sutter Sullwold, continue to impress their coaches with their relentless pursuit of the ball both on offense and defense. In his first start of the season, Jeff Peterson played very inspired rugby filling in for Tyler Winters who had to move to prop due to injuries by other teammates. The Black Oak other scores were by flanker Tanner Topp, Bryce Jagoe and Alex Saise who made 3 of his conversion kicks to round out the 36 points.

With the win, the Black Oak varsity boys will play for the Cup Championship of Rugby Nor Cal. Their opponent will be Bellarmine College Prep out of San Jose, who just got a big win over Cougar Rugby from Sacramento. The Cup Championship will be played in Stockton on May 6^th as well!

In addition to the Chico Oaks High School teams having so much success, the men’s club, the Mighty Oaks have been doing damage as well. With the most impressive season the Mighty Oaks have had since their National Championship season in 2002, the Oaks are undefeated and Nor Cal champs with a big win over an always TOUGH Colusa County Rugby Club last Saturday in San Francisco. Next up for the Oaks men is the Pacific North West Eugene Stags in the first round of the National Sweet 16. Luckily for the Oaks, this match is back in the bay area, on Treasure Island. Their kickoff is set at noon on May 6^th. Good luck boys! Keep rolling!

Chico State Women’s Rugby advance to Sweet 16’s after winning both of their games this past weekend during the DI Pacific Mountain Rugby Conference playoffs in Palo Alto, California.

Chico State faced Oregon Ducks Saturday, with a 27-26 win. The backs struggled with ball movement for most of the first half making it forward game. Two of the five tries were scored by Senior flanker, Lucero Cardiel, and prop, Rebecca Newlin. Due to an ankle injury, junior fullback, Darby McFall struggled to complete conversions but manages to make one fall, making it a one-point lead over the Ducks.

Chico State took on Washington State Sunday afternoon with yet again, another one-point lead, the final score, 22-21. Washington and Chico went back-and-forth in tries during the first half, however, McFall missed one conversion ending the half with a score of 12-14.

Washington State capitalizes in the second half and scores a try after a yellow card was given to junior outside centre, Stefani Bergerhouse. With just under five minutes left, Chico was awarded a penalty just outside the 22 and McFall lands her kick adding three points to the board.

With only a minute left on the ref’s clock, Chico down by six points, Washington continues to pick and jam near their 22, instead of finding touch. Washington’s scrum half gets it to the backs to go through the hands, but Chico’s defensive pressure causes a dropped ball that bounces into the hands of senior wing, Kayla Vasquez who scores her fourth try of the weekend.

With no time left, McFall completes the conversion adding two points to the board and ending the game in a huge one-point victory.
